::ABSORPTION & ASSIMILATION (PART 2)::

LEARNING OUTCOMES 3
Draw and label the structure of a villus.

LEARNING OUTCOMES 4
Explain the process of absorption in the villus.

  1. Involved diffusion & active transport.
  2. Glucose, amino acids, water-soluble vitamins & minerals diffuse into epithelial cell and are absorbed into the capillaries.
  3. The remaining nutrients across the epithelial lining involves active transport.
  4. Glycerols, & fatty acids recombined to form tiny droplets of lipids and together with fat-soluble vitamins enter the epithelial cell and the move into lacteals and enter lymphatic system.
  5. The content are drained into the right lymphatic duct and thoracic duct before being emptied into the blood stream through the subclavian veins.
  6. Capillaries that drain water-soluble nutrients away from the villi converge into the hepatic portal vein which leads to the liver.
  7. From here, nutrients are transported to all cells in the body.
